Liverpool midfielder Fabinho has signed a new five-year contract to keep him at Anfield until 2026.

It’s reward for the Brazil international’s outstanding contribution for the club since he arrived in a £43.7 million move from Monaco three years ago.

Fabinho, whose previous deal ran until 2023, has clocked up 122 appearances for Liverpool and has helped them win the Champions League, the Club World Cup and the Premier League. The 27-year-old spent the summer with Brazil at the Copa America, where they lost to Argentina in the final.

"I'm delighted to have signed a new contract with the club," Fabinho told Liverpool's official website. "Since the beginning of the conversation, I was really positive about it because it's what I wanted – staying in this club, keep playing for Liverpool. Now this is official and I'm really happy.

"These last three seasons I've been really happy here. I learned a lot with the manager, with all the staff, with the boys as well.

"We achieved things together and for me I think it's the best place to be, the best place to keep growing, to keep learning from the staff, from the boys. Hopefully we will keep achieving good things."

Liverpool know they can't allow too many players to grow old together and that includes Salah, Mane and Firmino

How important was Fabinho last season?

Last season he showcased his versatility by filling in at centre-back during an injury crisis.

His return to the holding midfield role during the run-in was key to Jurgen Klopp’s side securing Champions League qualification after a difficult period.

Will Liverpool renew any other contracts?

Liverpool tied down Trent Alexander-Arnold last month until the summer of 2025. That was always planned to be the first of many contract renewals which were to be agreed by sporting director Michael Edwards in the coming weeks and months.

Fabinho was expected to be among them, and that has proven to be the case.

Alisson, Van Dijk, Salah, Mane and Andy Robertson are among those in line for extensions.

The Athletic recently revealed how talks with captain Jordan Henderson, whose current deal runs until 2023, had failed to progress following initial discussions this summer.

Where can I find out more?

The Athletic’s Liverpool correspondent James Pearce discussed earlier this month the club’s tough contractual decisions which lie ahead.

It’s not realistic that Klopp’s long-established front three of Salah, Mane and Firmino will all have their contracts renewed.
