Overview

Micro LEDforum 2021 – Innovation, Vision, and Foresight
Following a subdued 2020 on account of the COVID-19 pandemic, the development of Micro and Mini LED technologies has ramped up again this year. The upcoming Micro LEDforum 2021 will reveal the latest developments in the manufacturing of Micro LED displays as well as in the application of Mini and Micro LED technologies. Significant progress has been made across the different sections of the supply chain for Micro LED displays (e.g., chip manufacturing, mass transfer, mass inspection, driver design, and backplane manufacturing). The same can also be said for the adoption of Micro and Mini LED technologies for new kinds of displays and niche lighting solutions (e.g., automotive lighting). TrendForce is honored to have invited several well-known experts in the Mini and Micro LED supply chain to share their views on the related technological advances and market trends during 2021.

Micro LED – Poised to Fulfill Its Huge Potential
LEDinside, a research unit under TrendForce, has observed that the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have galvanized developers of Micro LED technologies to take on an even bolder and more forward-looking approach to R&D. At the same time, they are considering various aspects of product development such as mass production feasibility and product applicability. In light of these activities, Micro LEDforum 2021 will provide a wide-ranging exploration into the opportunities and challenges across the Micro LED supply chain. The presentations and discussions will revolve around application trends, with special focuses on large-sized displays (e.g., TVs and home theater displays), smartwatch displays, and automotive displays. Additionally, the event will delve into the prospect of Micro LED in some niche market segments such as smart automotive headlights and AR devices.

Mini LED – Starting to Take Off
The market attention on the usage of Mini LED solutions has mostly been on the latest iPads and laptop (notebook) computers that feature Mini LED backlight. Apart from these two device categories, TVs are also ready for the uptake of Mini LED solutions, and electronics brands such as Samsung, LG, TCL, Xiaomi, and Sony are all developing related products. Micro LEDforum 2021 will reveal insights on the penetration of Mini LED in different application segments (e.g., TVs, tablets, laptops, and displays). The related topics that the event will cover include product opportunities, technological challenges, and cost structure analysis. Taken together, the experts’ presentations will provide an understanding on the future prospect of Mini LED in face of the strong competitive pressure from OLED.

Dr. Li received his Ph.D. degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (USA) with Prof. Fred Schubert in 2003. Dr. Li's Ph.D. work focused on gallium nitride (GaN) light-emitting devices and solid state lighting applications.
In 2020, Dr. Li received Special Recognition Award from Society for Information Display (SID). It recognized Dr. Li and his team in development and commercialization of MicroLED technology. It also indicated that MicroLED has been identified as the new generation display technology and key development topic.

Mr. Xie has undertaken the R&D activities of several science and technology development projects from the government, and his achievements have won China Patent Award, Guangdong Science and Technology Award and other awards.

Dustin Ho is currently Technical Program Director for ICAPS and Fab Environmental Solutions group at Applied Materials, responsible for implementing innovative solutions for semiconductor process. He re-joined Applied in 2014. From 2011 -2014, he was Marketing Director and International Senior Expert focused on new market development at a major gas company. During his first decade at Applied, Dustin worked in Applied’s solar division; the dielectric DSM group, ESPD emission technology programs. Dustin Ho has published 20+ technical papers, has 32 patents, and has made numerous presentations at global industry conferences.

Ray-Hua Hong

Micro LED Technology Trend

Ray-Hua Horng received the B.S., and Ph.D. degrees from National Cheng Kung University and National Sun Yat-Sen University, Taiwan, respectively, all in electrical engineering. She is currently Distinguished Professor with the Institute of Electronics, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. Her main interests are solid-state lighting devices, III–V solar cells, optoelectronic devices, high power devices, and gas sensors.
Dr. Horng received numerous awards recognizing her work on high-brightness LEDs. She has been awarded by the Ministry of Education of Taiwan for Industry/ University Corporation Project in 2002, by the Ministry of Science & Technology of Taiwan for the excellent technology transfer of high-power LEDs in 2006, 2008, 2009, 2010 and 2011 by Chi Mei Optoelectronics for the first prize of Chi Mei Award in 2008, by the 2007 IEEE Region 10 Academia-Industry Partnership Award and distinguish research award of National Science Council of Taiwan in 2013. Prof. Horng is the Fellows of the AIE, IET, SPIE, IEEE, OSA and IOP.

Dr. Hiroaki ONUMA is a Associate Manager at Development Division II, Laser Business Unit, Sharp Fukuyama Laser CO., LTD.
He received Ph.D. degree from Graduated School of Tohoku University in 2011. He had worked on relationship between electronic state and crystal structure of Eu2+-doped phosphor. He won IDW '06 Poster Paper Award and Merck Grand Award on IMID 2010 according to his research.
He joined Sharp Corporation and worked on the development of LED device.
Currently, he is in charge of the development of color conversion layer for full color micro LED display at Sharp Fukuyama Semiconductor CO., LTD and Sharp Fukuyama Laser Co., LTD. He won the IDW’19 and 20 Best Paper Award according to the micro LED works.

Dr Honglei Ji graduated from Harbin Institute of Technology in 2002, received Master's degree in Material Physics and Chemistry from Changchun University of Technology in 2007 and his Ph.D. in Material Research from Ningbo Institute of Materials Technology & Engineering, Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2017.
In 2007, began to research and develop LED backlight technology. In 2010, he joined TCL Multimedia Co., Ltd. and began to devote himself to the development and application of PL quantum dot backlight products in 2012. In 2015, he won the Guangdong Science and Technology Progress Award.
Several articles and patents related to PL quantum dot diaphragms have been published.
