## Olivier de weck
I am Yi-Ping Chen, completed my master’s degree in ME at National Taiwan University (NTU) under the supervision of Prof. Kuei-Yuan Chan, and currently an R&D engineer in the aeronautic industry. I am interested in applying to a Ph.D. program in Aero. and Astro., also seeking a position in your lab in Fall, 2022.
I am enthusiastic about system design and reliability issues, and my research experience hitherto covers topics around designing control law for aircraft, modeling, and design under uncertainty for complex systems, with experience in HiL tests for vehicles, STPA, system development/design, and design automation. Currently, I am seeking for solutions to the robust design of generic complex system via engineering, and having a strong desire to purchase an advance degree for mastering and innovating techniques on system development.
I have been investigating laboratories where I would be interested in research, and your research, in particular, caught my interest. I am truly fascinated after reading several papers around the application of MBSE on dealing with uncertainties, such as the journal "Addressing deep uncertainty in space system development through model-based adaptive design", and finished the OCW "Fundamentals of Systems Engineering" that I found Model-based system engineering is currently an indispensable tool for constructing robust but complex system. This is especially exciting to me for it may fully match my goal -- as long term progress, I have an intense passion that one day I could implement these methods on a robust solution to system-level design and further on conducting interdisciplinary policies for government, which I always believe engineering can do more than engineering.
I expect that my background is compatible with your team and may further address other issues on MBSE, and may deal more with issues via model updating and robust design at the MDO stage or emergence management. Also, my academic achievements (ranking 2/41 in grad. school and 2/163 in undergrad.) and awards (listed in CV) can back my diligence in work, solidity in techniques, and independence and quality in academic research among my peers. Also, beyond research, my position in leadership, activities, and experience in TA can bolster my compatibility either in teamwork, management, and teaching. To be concise, I am confident that I'm a ready person for this position.
My publications on Journal of Mechanical Design and IDETC, CV, and transcripts are attached. If you have any available position next year, or interested in my idea, motivation, and application, please let me know. It would be great if we can know each other on my stories and your research plans in the future more in further contact over Skype/phone/etc.

I am Yi-Ping Chen, completed my master’s degree in ME at National Taiwan University (NTU) under the supervision of Prof. Kuei-Yuan Chan, and currently an R&D engineer in the aeronautic industry. I am interested in applying for a Ph.D. program in mechanical engineering, also seeking a position in your lab in Fall, 2022. After changing information with Mr. Daicong Da and make sure that we might have some coherence, he encouraged me to directly reach out to you.
Currently, I am seeking solutions to the robust design of generic complex systems by considering uncertainty in model-based designs. My previous researches focused on model updating techniques for vehicle system, and adopted several tools for design under uncertainty such as metamodeling, GSA, PCE, etc, and currently focus on designing control law for aircraft. Realizing that a reliable system should be based on high-fidelity physical models which are fused with real-world data, I have a strong desire to purchase an advanced degree for a higher-level and larger scale of implementation on these design automation approaches, and hoping that I can improve the procedure in system design from either the user-ends or the physical-ends.
I have been attracted by your research interests since my first year in graduate school as your work has enlightened my understanding of the design field. As a reader of several publications of yours (Model calibration issues such as Arendt2010, Arendt20125, Wang2016, Li2014, SA issues such as Jin2001, Jin2004, Garimella2001, etc), I was inspired by how you resolve uncertainty in a system. I emulated them and even cited several of them in my thesis and publications. Also, I am so amazed by your recent work around multi-scale and multi-dimensional UQ on materials -- thoroughly and fluently implementation of integrating the familiar design techniques elevated my expectation on the application of these skills, and also inspired me to apply similar concepts in my current position. Fascinated by the variety of applications of design, I would be excited if I can well render these tools on constructing systems not only for machines but also for the social systems, decision making, and construction of policies with communal benefits. I believe under your supervision, I could learn how to become a good mentor and could be encouraged to become a professor and serves in academia.
I expect that my germane research background is compatible with your team and may further tackle other issues enthusiastically. My academic achievements (ranking 2/41 in grad. school, 2/163 in undergrad.) and awards (listed in CV) can back my diligence in work, solidity in techniques, and independence and quality in academic research among my peers. Also, beyond research, my position in leadership, activities, and experience in TA can bolster my compatibility either in teamwork, management, and teaching. To be concise, I am confident that I'm a ready person for this position.
My publications on JMD and IDETC(presentation video), CV(my LinkedIn), and transcripts are attached. If you have any available position next year, or interested in my idea, motivation, and application, please let me know. It would be great if we can know each other on my stories and your research plans in the future more in further contact over Skype/Zoom/etc.

After an online meeting with Jana and made sure that we might have some coherence, she encouraged me to directly reach out to you.
Let me briefly introduce myself. my research experience hitherto covers topics around designing control law for aircraft, modeling, and design under uncertainty for complex systems, with experience in HiL tests for vehicles, system development/design, and design automation. I hope, by purchasing an advanced degree, the combination of them may build more comprehensive eyesight on designing the robust systems and expect to implement these methods on the higher-level problems, such as forming policies, decision making, and fundamental researches.
I have been investigating laboratories where I would be interested in research, and your research, in particular, caught my interest. I am truly fascinated by your intention of improving the design method on human ends and further on improve the fundamental designing mindset, making the problem definition more precise. I am also attracted by the wide variety of your research, which is solid in engineering, but beyond engineering. Besides your research, I admire your dedication to D-Lab -- similar to D-school in NTU, a place that cultivates students to solve human problems based on design thinking. I was a TA in one of their course that helped students to define problems of the rurals' and the poors' and I enjoyed helping students and arousing their empathies. These are especially exciting to me for it may fully match my purpose in research -- to provide a solution to improve how design works via engineering, and at last improve the quality of human's general life. I believe your supervision may change my mindset on resolving a design problem, also the height of your eyesight may consolidate my determination on ameliorating the communal social problems, and also inspire more of my empathy for humans.
I expect that my germane research background is compatible with your team and may further tackle other issues enthusiastically, also I believe I could assist in teaching work and mentoring undergraduate students. My academic achievements (ranking 2/41 in grad. school and 2/163 in undergrad.) and awards (listed in CV) can back my diligence in work, solidity in techniques, and independence and quality in academic research among my peers. Also, beyond research, my position in leadership, activities, and experience in TA can bolster my compatibility either in teamwork, management, and teaching. After an online meeting with Charlene and made sure that we might have some coherence, she encouraged me to directly reach out to you.
Let me briefly introduce myself. my research experience hitherto covers topics around aircraft control law design, modeling, and design under uncertainty for complex systems, with experience in HiL tests for vehicles, creative mechanism design, and design automation. I hope the combination of them may build more comprehensive eyesight on designing issues, either in the system-level robust design or discussing what are the difficulties of implementing novel design or system development techniques into real industrial product development. Moreover, not only desiring for improvements in design division but also a strong calling to become a professor are pushing me to purchase an advanced degree.
I have been investigating laboratories where I would be interested in research, and what caught my interest is not only your research but in particular, is your video clips of students' responses to your teaching. The research issues around human and design tools interaction, and how to assess a designer's thoughts are intriguing and inspiring to me. Also, as Charlene said, you're omniscient in design issues and fully rely on student's independence. However, aside from your research, what really captivates my sight is that I am fascinated by your passion and creativity in teaching and taking "teaching" seriously, also Charlene mentioned that you are willing to give big hands to the students who enjoy and tend to participate in teaching. These are extremely exciting to me because I have been dedicated on either how to provide a suitable environment for student education and to inspire my classmates' and juniors' motivation in learning through the resources and powers of student associations, also extended this intention on being an inspiring TA in my master years, for more than 6 years in combined. I found it would greatly encourage me on how to be both a good research and an excellent teacher if I were under your supervision and mentored by you.
Subject: Request for PhD Supervision Fall 2022
Dear Professor Allison,
I am Yi-Ping Chen, and I have completed my master's degree in ME in National Taiwan University(NTU). Due to my highly enthusiasm in researches about developing methods for constructing safe and reliable systems, I am interested in apply for a PhD position in your lab at Fall, 2022.
My researches and hand on experience hitherto are focusing around the reliability issue. Once I was responsible for the fail-safe strategy in an HiL platform for an autonomous vehicle, and finish my master's thesis, under the supervision of Prof. Kuei-Yuan Chan, on proposing an improved method on model updating. Currently, I am participating in the conceptual and preliminary design stage of a switch-blade UAV and an primary training aircraft.
The area that excites my interest is the multidisciplinary design optimization in dynamic system, so is the CCD, since I considered it an irreplaceable stage in development of a reliable systems, which in my explanation is a combination of high-fidelity physical model, MDO that considers uncertainties, and a proper system structure. Since the CCD itself isn't mature enough for designing real complex system, I have a strong intention to dive in this area, adding my experience on uncertainty quantification, optimization, and hand on experience in aircraft development inside, and perform a more feasible approach to integrative design.
For my previous work, I published a paper entitled "Unknown Parameter Excitation and Estimation for Complex Systems With Dynamic Performances" on JMD, and also it's previous version on IDETC 2020, both are attached in this mail along with my CV.
If you have any available position next year, or interested in my idea and application for cooperation, please let me know.

Subject: Request for PhD Supervision Fall 2022
Dear Professor Allison,
I am Yi-Ping Chen, and I have completed my master's degree in ME in National Taiwan University(NTU) with outstanding ranking and publications. Due to my highly enthusiasm in researches about developing methods for constructing safe and reliable systems, I am interested in apply for a PhD position in your lab at Fall, 2022.
During my master's studies, I had hand on experience in building fail-safe strategy for autonomous vehicle, and my master's thesis (advised by Prof. Kuei-Yuan Chan) focused on model updating techniques. Moreover, currently I am participating in the conceptual and preliminary design stage of UAV and preliminary training aircraft, dealing with real, large scale, and extremely complex system design issues.
I have visited your research articles and found my field of interest in your research area: multidisciplinary design optimization in dynamic system, also the CCD is intriguing to me since I considered it an irreplaceable stage in development of a reliable systems, which in my explanation is a combination of high-fidelity physical model, MDO that considers uncertainties, and a proper system architecture. Since the CCD itself isn't mature enough and are not capable of dealing with system with higher complexity or uncertainty, as mentioned in several papers (Cui2020, Liu2020, IDETC2020) , I have a strong intention to dive in this area, adding my research background (Modeling techniques and fail-safe architecture) and industrial experience in aircraft R&D within, either to strike a balance on trade-off of system simplification or suspension during the design stage, to validate the hitherto method in HiL stage, or to propose an improved method on decomposing large scale stochastic problem to CO or ATC form more intelligently, and at last, perform a more feasible approach to integrative design.
For my work in master's thesis, I published a paper entitled "Unknown Parameter Excitation and Estimation for Complex Systems With Dynamic Performances" on JMD, and also it's previous version on IDETC 2020 both are attached in this mail along with my CV.
With greatest thanks, I would be glad to hearing from you soon and looking forward to your positive response.

I am interested in how to apply Co-design into the real and complex system integrated design, since I am currently at the preliminary stage of designing aircraft under a relatively restorative organization. A great interest of mine is that if the Co-design method is structured under intellectual suspended and iterated ATC, can the efficiency and practicality of MDSDO be improved and can be implemented with high-fidelity physical models along with uncertainties. This intriguing issue may be deeply discussed with my previous experience participated in.
For my work in master's thesis, I published a paper entitled "Unknown Parameter Excitation and Estimation for Complex Systems With Dynamic Performances" on JMD, and also it's previous version on IDETC 2020 both are attached in this mail along with my CV.
