“It's just grilled chicken with no seasoning…Nothing that he can do is what the Lakers need” – Former NBA champion analyses why Russell Westbrook is not the missing piece of the puzzle for the Lakers

Russell Westbrook is in the hot seat in Los Angeles. The former NBA MVP faced a lot of criticism for his performances last season. Although the trio of LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Russell Westbrook have only played over 20 games together, it has been Russ who has shouldered majority of the blame for the team's struggles.

Former NBA champion Channing Frye recently discussed Westbrook's situation with the Lakers, explaining that although the former MVP is a great player, his skill set isn't what the team needs at the moment.

He said:

"It's just grilled chicken with no seasoning. The expectations are what does he do and how could he do it that will help this team affect winning? Nothing that he can do is what the Lakers need.

"Oh you do need a point guard? Oh, sorry LeBron, do you need someone to attack the basket? Oh, LeBron and AD. Do you need emotional leader? Patrick Beverley."

Russ's poor last season led many to believe that he could be traded before this season. However, head coach Darvin Ham has remained adamant that he sees the nine-time All-Star in his plans.

Players who would suit the Lakers’ current roster better than Russell Westbrook

Plenty of rumors surfaced this offseason regarding potential trades for Westbrook. Although no trade materialized, the team could very well look to move the former MVP before the trade deadline. A strong perimeter shooter is someone many believe should be acquired if Westbrook is traded.

The first option is a trade for sharpshooter Buddy Hield, who currently plays for the Indiana Pacers. Hield has continued to find his name in potential trades for Westbrook despite the fact that he was traded to the Pacers midway through last season. With a career 3-point percentage of 39.8, Hield could be what the Lakers need at the moment.

The next option that some have suggested is Kyrie Irving. Irving is one of the best offensive players in the league who is also a very good 3-point shooter. Additionally, given his relationship with LeBron James and the success the two had in Cleveland, Irving could be a natural fit for the Lakers.

Despite the opening night loss against the Warriors, it should be noted that Russell Westbrook put in a good effort for the Lakers. Over the course of 30 minutes played, Westbrook recorded a double-double with 19 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and a steal.

Some are feeling optimistic that given some time, the trio of AD, Russ and LeBron could work.
