This undergraduate course surveys the literary works of canonical writers in Taiwan. We will read works in translation from authors in colonial, post-war, post-martial law and contemporary Taiwan, and seek to use these works as a window to understand Taiwan society and history. Most of these readings will be primary material in English translation, including short stories, novellas, as well as literary criticism. This will be supplemented by secondary sources that introduce some of the major issues and debates in the literary developments.
