Why is popular literature popular? What are the reasons for its appeal? How do literary critics evaluate popular literature? What kind of pleasure do popular readers get? These are some of the questions we would address in this class. We would specifically focus on two popular genres, detective fiction, preferred by male readers, and popular romance, preferred by female readers. We would read selections from representative texts, and discuss selected criticism by literary critics. Audio-visual materials would also be used.
