Jessica Pearson is striking out on her own with her eponymous Suits spinoff this July, and she’ll be doing so with an ensemble of new coworkers at the Chicago mayor’s office. But what about her friends back in New York City? Could some of Jessica’s former colleagues migrate over to the offshoot when the long-running USA drama wraps up its run this year?
“My gut reaction is, I don’t really see any of the Suits characters being regulars on the spinoff,” executive producer Aaron Korsh tells TVLine. “It’s a different tone, it’s a different world, and I don’t see it. It doesn’t mean that couldn’t change.”
“There are worlds in which I could see it, but I would sooner think that they would, in success, show up for an episode or an arc,” Korsh continues. “But you never know. If they showed up for an episode or an arc, and it turned out to be outstanding, and they fit in well, then it’s possible. Anything is possible.”
As someone who has already visited the Windy City in the backdoor pilot, Harvey is an obvious and well-suited candidate for a guest spot. And Gabriel Macht agrees that “it would be great” to drop by star Gina Torres’ new digs, but he’s not sure how it would work. “I don’t know if Harvey really fits in that world,” Macht confesses. “Maybe there’d be some opportunity to do something… My hope is for the Suits fans to go and start watching Pearson. That would be excellent. If those fans really, really want to see Harvey come in there and try and fix a few things, that would be fantastic. But this is her show, and she’s got a great cast.”
Plus, there are logistics that would need to be ironed out to bring the lawyer to the spinoff. “It’s all going to depend on timing and where I am and what I’m doing, what’s going to work out as far as what’s right for my personal life and all of that,” Macht explains. “But I’m super psyched to see what they’ve done.”
Pearson debuts Wednesday, July 17 at 10/9c on USA, following the final-season premiere of Suits.
Which Suits character would you most like to see on Pearson?
I’m still bitter over the pilot. Using a Suits finale for it would always have been a bad idea in my opinion, but the fact that they focused Mike and Rachel’s last episode before they left on Jessica instead of giving them a proper send-off is unforgivable. At least Mike will be back, but we didn’t even get to see Rachel say goodbye to anyone after 7 years. I kept waiting for the Jessica scenes to be over so we could get back to something I care about. There was nothing in the episode that made me want to see more of that. If they had handled the pilot better I wouldn’t have had such negative feelings about the spinoff, but while I love Gina and I’m happy she got her own show, I never really cared that much about Jessica to begin with. The possibility of other Suits characters showing up in the future is honestly the main reason why I’m going to force myself to try at least one episode.
The backdoor pilot took away important time from Mike and Rachel’s goodbye episode. It was a bad move from whoever had the idea to insert the pilot in an important, meaningful episode. Mike and Harvey’s goodbye was rushed, Louis and Rachel’s goodbye was nowhere to be found, the same with Donna and Rachel’s farewell. I read the producer saying viewers had to assume it all happened behind scenes: the excuse falls apart when you look at the amount of plot holes and consider these characters had been on the show for 7 seasons. That being said, it shouldn’t taint the spin off itself. Jessica’s show could be a good one and maybe a potential Emmy nominee. The world pf political corruption isn’t my thing but I’m sure some will find it interesting.
I agree. Their departure was so poorly developed even though it was announced before the season started (I’m not wrong,) so the writers should have taken at least the final six episodes to give them a better sendoff. And then, of a two-part season finale, they decided to use the final hour to introduce Jessica’s spin-off when they could have done that during the first one and leave the latter to the final moments of Rachel and Mike at the firm. I was so angry back then, that it was a relief when the new season began and the introduction of Katherine Heigl’s character and Amanda Schull being there full-time ended up working just fine for the show.
Macht and Korsh are right. This is Jessica Pearson’s show, it’s her time to shine. This is her story, her moment. Harvey already had his show and it was hella good. It lasted 9 years, it’s time to let the character rest until one of those popular reunions happen. Suits, the movie would be a neat idea in a few years.
Haha … Suits was Jessica for me, and when she was on it was THE show. I’m just bummed they had her lose her law license.
You’re 100% right PatriciaLee!
Regardless of title, Jessica’s show was “Suits”. When she left the firm (for any reason), that should have been the end for the majority of seeing (or any type of mentioning) that character. Two wrong moves in adding so many names to Harvey-&-Louis’ firm (that weren’t Donna’s) & giving Jessica yet another show to lead.
I wonder if every episode’s bad guy is going to somehow get past security and waltz into the Mayor’s office at exactly the moment they are being talked about.
Maybe Louis will come to Chicago for some out of town mud…..
“Fix” a few things? Um. Okay. Slightly egotistical.
As Suits was Harvey’s show, I’m not sure he’d be a good fit for Pearson and unless Donna and him end up splitting by the series finale, I don’t think she could just jump to the spin-off either. Having said that, I’d be more than happy if there was a way for Katrina or Gretchen to be a part of Pearson. Both actresses/characters are really good and I’d love to see more of them in the future.
Whether or not Jessica lost her law license (which leaves me wondering how much more help she can be to the mayor’s office), moving to a new town, IMO, left the other place to be Harvey’s to run (at least “in large part”)… Ergo I would see no employees coming for any employment/life reasons.
Harvey, Mike and Donna need a show of their own!
So sad to see Suites end! 😔
